SQUEEZE PLAY

Perfect Vanish by Fumihiko Kuroda

The Squeeze Play props can also be used to completely vanish an object. This is a rather high-level technique that differs significantly from the method explained in the instruction sheet. Place one disk on top of the cup, and then place the block onto the disk. Finally, place the second disk on top of the block. Make sure that the words "Squeeze Play" that are printed on the top disk are oriented so that they read properly from your perspective. If you squeeze the disks together strongly with your fists when the base of your right pinky finger is located at the second "e" in "Squeeze," the block will instantly be propelled up your right sleeve. It will appear as if the block has completely vanished. As you can imagine, this will take a considerable amount of practice, but once you master this technique, you will be able to vanish dice, mah-jong pieces, large men's rings, and many other small objects. If you are unable to make this work at first, try repositioning the cup in relation to your body, until you find the perfect angle for your arm.

THE UNUSUAL SUSPECTS

If you enjoy card magic and want to use the "profiler" presentation during your performance, you can use a stripper deck in place of the suspect cards. Remove seven picture cards from the stripper deck. Explain, "A crime has taken place. There are seven suspects. There are xx men, xx women, and xx teenagers." As you say this, include the appropriate numbers for the kings, queens and jacks that you hold. Have your spectator remove and remember one of the seven cards. Explain, "Your card will be the criminal. Please remember the face of the criminal very carefully." Insert the seven cards into the case, and ask several questions, such as, "Was it a red card?" and "Did the criminal have a moustache?" or "Was the criminal holding a sword in his hand?" It does not matter if your spectator does not answer correctly since he/she may not have paid attention to those points. Explain, "A witness' testimony is amazingly unreliable, but the profiler never makes mistakes." Even if your spectator has lied to you, you will still be able to automatically find his/her card thanks to the gimmicked "profiler."
TRISECTOR

Visible Restoration by Kazumasa Shimizu

At the end, when you remove the blades after returning the case to its original condition, do not engage the gimmick; simply remove the two blades. Place the case on the table so that the dollar bill side is facing upwards. Explain that the bill has not yet joined back together, and that you can see the spaces between the pieces of the bill. Have your spectator touch his finger to the center window, and press down firmly when you count to three. When he presses the case, the bill will instantaneously restore, and the spaces that used to be present between the pieces are visibly reconnected. You may now remove the bill.

BIRD WATCHER

Tip 1: Instead of using the black ribbon to cover the numbers, you can let the spectator place the cards overlapping each other so that the top part of each card covers the number on the previous card. The black rectangle is used to cover the last card's number.

Tip 2: After you have correctly divined the number of birds the usual way, explain that you can also use the cards to practice estimating the total number of birds in a forest when only some are visible.

You have to remember the parity of the key-number from the previous phase. All you have to do is remember if your key-number was odd or even. For example, let's say your key-number is 3. All you have to remember is that it's odd.

Turn your back toward the spectator again and ask him to turn over any two cards, and repeat this procedure as many times as he wishes. This turning over won't change the parity of the key-number - if you started with an even key-number you'd still have an even key-number. In the case described here there will be an odd key-number after all this shuffling. When he is satisfied with the shuffling, ask him to take the black rectangle and cover any of the cards, to simulate some birds hiding unseen in the forest. Now you turn around to get a new key-number. In our example you know that you expect an odd key-number, so if you count an odd key-number now you know that this is your correct key-number. If you count an even number, you know that there is one extra hiding under the black rectangle, so you still know the correct key-number without having seen what's under the black rectangle. It works analogus if you know that you are to expect an even key-number - if you count to an odd key-number, you know that one more is hiding under the black rectangle.

State the total number of birds in the forest. Have him count together all birds, but to leave the hidden birds for last. This adds a small element of drama when the card is eventually uncovered.

Expert version: If you are sure that you can hear when the spectator turns over a single card, ask him to turn over one card instead of two at the time. Each time one card is turned over the parity of your key-number changes. So if you start with an odd number and hear him turn one card over, think "even". When you hear him turn over another card, think "odd" and so on.

Finish with the powerful cased version as usual.

IMPOSSIBLE PEN

Method Using a Silk by Kenji Shimizu

The benefit of time misdirection is lost, but this variation allows you to increase the impossibility factor by replacing the frame with a silk that is draped onto the case. After showing the case empty, place the lid on top, and cover the lid with a silk scarf. Next, place the pen onto the silk. Cover the pen with both hands, and then move the pen as necessary so that it instantly enters the interior of the case. The pen will not land in the fixed location within the case at this point, since it is still wrapped up in the silk. Lift the silk up and away, and the pen will come to rest at its fixed location inside the case. Tap the lid to emphasize that there are no holes present. Then, remove the lid and display that the pen has penetrated into the case.

ANTIGRAVITY ROCK

Lubor Fiedler was once demonstrating the ANTIGRAVITY ROCK to a large group of people at a magic convention held in England. After he finished his performance, Richard Kaufman (editor in chief of Genii magazine) was standing next to Lubor. Lubor removed the rock from the frame on the table, and told Kaufman to gently place his pointer finger on the center of the frame. He then began to move the frame to the right and left, which startled Kaufman so much that he let out a scream. Lubor then had another person do the same thing at the other side of the frame, and that person also yelled out in surprise. The surrounding people had no idea what was going on, but they laughed at the reaction of those two men. When we heard this story, the Tenyo staff took the props in hand, and tried to perform the same effect on ourselves. However, we could not understand what was supposed to be going on. But, when we showed the same effect to people who did not know the secret, we too were able to get screams. The discrepancy between the senses of vision and touch cause spectators to experience a bizarre sensation, as if there were a special magnet under the frame.
MINI-MORPHOSIS

Method Using a Jumbo Card by Satoshi Toyoda

This is a variation that utilizes a jumbo card in place of the curtain. (The jumbo card should be 4 times as large as a regulation playing card.) The impression will be different than that of the stage illusion, but this handling increases the speed, and allows you to perform the effect in a nonchalant manner. Affix the gimmick used in the curtain in between two jumbo cards. To perform, set the two balls exactly as described in the instruction sheet. Then, instead of covering the box with the curtain, hold the jumbo card in front of the box. Either move the card up and down, or left and right, to make the balls change places instantaneously.
